Fur Trapping

Fur trapping has been a big part of our family for many years. Wayne's Father, Gordon Clark starting fur trapping when he was only 11 years old. He made his living fur trapping for many years. Wayne also fur trapped for many years. We will share with you some history, pictures, stories, and fur trapping knowledge on this page. We will also write about the current fur trapping seasons as Gordon is still trapping every fall.

Another great fur trapping season is coming to an end! I can’t think of a better way to end the year. After a very busy summer season, it is a great way to excercise the mind and body. We never did get all of our trails cut out after the early ice/snow storm this fall, but we took a good stab at it. Hopefully we will get the rest cut next year. Some of our trails were so caved in they were hard to follow! Along with being a short guy, and having to walk around in over two feet of snow, made it a little tough!

The other day, we were looking at our furs for the season, and I thought “how lucky am I to be trapping with my Dad and nephew!” Doesn’t get any better than three generations working side by side, sharing our knowledge and respect for Mother Nature as well as memories and experiences had on the line over the years!

Unfortunately, the fur prices are not what they were back in the 1980’s, however when I turn and look at my Dad still actively trapping at 86 years “young” and healthy, I realize that there is more value to this career choice than most people would think! I find for myself, being involved in several businesses, time seems to move along at a pretty fast pace.... fur trapping seems to keep me grounded as a person, and reminds me not to get caught up in the hectic day to day events. And who knows... maybe I will get lucky “health-wise” and be trapping for many years to come like my Dad!

I truly believe it is important to remember where you came from, and where you got your first start in life, no matter where life has taken you over the years!

You know a “real trapper” when you look at his two buck skinning knives he has used for over 50 years!
