We are pleased to report that the spring melt appears to be on track for a normal year this year. This should put the ice out during the first week of May. Currently, the snow has melted off of the ice and the ice is in the process of lifting, which is a good sign. On most area lakes in places where the ice was not disturbed this winter, there is anywhere from 24-30 inches of ice left. On smaller lakes there is only about 18 inches left. The forecast calls for a little bit of cool weather, but then it is supposed to warm up towards the middle of April. We are hoping to have good ice to fish on until the end of the season (April 15th) and then we hope to see the ice leave by the beginning of May. We will keep everyone updated on the progress!
This picture should make you feel a little more hopeful than last year. Meagan took this picture outside of her door in Dryden, Ontario (30 miles East of Vermilion Bay). On the left is April 1, 2014 and on the right is April 1, 2015.
