Spring is finally upon us and as Walleye opener approaches, everyone is anxious to hear about the ice conditions and share "ice-out" predictions.
We are pleased to predict a "close to normal" spring break up. The bigger lakes like the Indian Lake Chain and Cedar Lake still have around 20 inches of ice. Some of the smaller lakes that Wayne has been flying into for minnows, have as little as 10-12 inches. They are forecasting for temperatures to stay cool well into April, so this will allow us to ice fish right until the end of the season (April 15th). Once the weather does warm up, it won't take long for the ice to break up and make its "exit" for another year.
Wayne has been working at one of our Outposts on Shabumeni Lake, which is located North of us in the Birch Lake area. He says that the last couple of snowfalls have just missed that area, leaving the lakes with just glare ice and no snow cover, which is very unusual. Normally, we see just the opposite where there is more snow up North that at home. Once the warm weather hits those northern lakes, we should see "ice out" about the same time as our local lakes. This will be nice for us getting the outposts ready for Walleye Opener (May 21st).
So if everything stays on track, we predict that the ice should be gone on most lakes in the area by the last couple of days of April or the first few days of May. We will keep you updated on the progress and our predictions every week from now until ice-out.
